Horatio Todd’s History
Horatio Todd, a well-known East Belfast character, was born on 30th November 1878 and became a prominent businessman, owning a pharmacy on Holywood Road. After qualifying as a pharmaceutical chemist in 1902, he opened the Trafalgar Medical Hall at 72 Holywood Road, named in honor of Lord Nelson and featuring a model of HMS Victory in the window.
Famed for his self-made products, including the popular Victory Powders, Horatio was also an expert perfumer with notable fans like Queen Mary. A master of marketing, his handbills featured slogans such as “5000 prescriptions with never a single mistake.” His care extended to animals, creating remedies for pets, and even crafting his own wine, Liebigs, sold in-store.
Known for his bespoke suits and signature buttonhole flower, he became the first president of the Pharmaceutical Association of Northern Ireland, a Justice of the Peace, and an OBE recipient. Today, Horatio Todd’s Bar & Restaurant proudly carries on his legacy as a lively hub from day to night.
